Here's a 5 Step Guide to Understand the IVF Process

A common fertility treatment, In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), has been around for decades now. This is the reason most people are aware of the basic idea behind IVF: uniting the egg and sperm outside the body in culture. However, there is a lot more that takes place before and after this.

Here’s 5 step guide to help you understand the IVF process before you connect with the best IVF centre in Srinagar-

1. Superovulation

As per the National Institutes of Health, you will be given fertility drugs to begin the process of stimulation or superovulation. The drugs contain Follicle Stimulating Hormone, which tells your body to produce more than one normal egg per month.

As more eggs are produced, the chances of having successful fertilization later on in the treatment increase.

Furthermore, in this step of IVF, you will also receive transvaginal ultrasounds and blood tests regularly. This is done to keep a check on your ovaries and monitor your hormone levels.

2. Removal of Eggs-

A little more than a day when your eggs have to be retrieved from your body, your doctor will give you a hormone injection to help your eggs mature quickly.

Afterward, you will undergo a minor surgical procedure, known as follicular aspiration, to remove your eggs. During the procedure, an ultrasound is used to guide a thin needle into your ovaries through the vagina. There is a device attached to this thin needle that sucks the eggs out one at a time.

While this procedure might sound painful to you; however, you will probably be given medication beforehand so that there is no discomfort. As per NH, you might experience some cramping after this part, but it will disappear within a day.

3. Collection of Sperm from Partner or Donor

When the doctor removes your eggs, your partner will be asked to provide a sperm sample. You can also choose to use the sperm of a donor. The sperms then undergo a high-speed wash and spin cycle to find the healthiest ones.

4. Unite Sperm and Eggs

This stage involves combining the best sperm with your eggs and is referred to as insemination.

The sperm usually takes a few hours to fertilize the eggs. Your doctor may also use Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection ( ICSI), where the sperm is directly injected into the egg.

5. Transfer of Embryo(s) into the Uterus

After the collection of eggs, you’ll receive another medication to prep the lining of the uterus to receive the embryos that will be transferred back into you.

After about three-five days of fertilization, the embryos are placed in the uterus. The doctor will transfer multiple embryos into the uterus in the hopes that at least one embryo will implant itself into the uterus lining and start developing. At times, more than one embryo gets implanted, that's why multiples are quite common in women who reproduce using IVF.

The next step of IVF will determine whether the procedure worked or not, which is called the pregnancy test.
